What Happened to Obi-Wan Kenobi After Star Wars 3?

There are 19 years between the events of Star Wars Episodes 3 and 4.

A lot happened during that time, but we don’t see much of it in the main movie series. In Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most important characters we meet, and despite how little is known about him during this time, he still played a very important role.

For a rundown of what happened to Obi-Wan Kenobi after Episode 3, keep reading.

The End of Revenge of the Sith

We go through a lot with Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith. At the start of the film, the Clone Wars are coming close to an end, with Obi-Wan and Anakin conducting what would be their final mission together.

By the end of the movie, Anakin has fallen to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader. The Anakin vs Obi-Wan lightsaber duel is one of the most important in the franchise as both master and apprentice are put against each other.

At the end of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan takes Anakin’s son Luke to Tatooine to be raised by his family there.

Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine

Obi-Wan spends most of the rest of his life on Tatooine watching over Luke from a distance. Much of his time here has not been delved into in great detail, but this will be explored further in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney Plus.

Before going their separate ways at the end of Revenge of the Sith, Yoda explains that he has training for him on Tatooine. He tells Obi-Wan that he will show him how to contact his former master Qui-Gon Jinn through the force. It’s safe to assume that Obi-Wan spent some time in communication with his old master while residing on Tatooine.

Other Encounters

There is one very significant event that takes place on Tatooine while Luke is still a child. The young Jedi Ezra Bridger goes in search of Obi-Wan after discovering he’s still alive. Ezra believes that Obi-Wan is the key to defeating the Sith, so decides to seek him out.

At the same time, Darth Maul is also looking for Obi-Wan to get his revenge, which Ezra intends to warn Obi-Wan about. When they meet, Obi-Wan tells Ezra that he cannot help him with the rebellion or his battle against the Sith, and sends him away when Maul arrives.

While Obi-Wan would rather avoid a fight, Maul suggests that he knows about Luke. At this point Obi-Wan doesn’t hesitate to duel Maul, and quickly defeats him, thus keeping Luke safe.

A New Hope

In A New Hope, Obi-Wan finally tells Luke about his father (to a degree) and begins training him as a Jedi. He then soon meets his former apprentice in the form of Darth Vader and takes part in his final lightsaber battle.

The lightsabers in A New Hope are as integral as in any other film, with Obi-Wan giving Anakin’s old lightsaber to Luke when telling him that his father was a Jedi Knight.

Obi-Wan duels Darth Vader with his second lightsaber which he built after Maul got rid of his original one during their first battle. This original lightsaber model is available to buy in the form of this Obi-Wan Kenobi lightsaber replica. Vader finally kills Obi-Wan, getting his revenge after years of trying.

Later Appearances

Obi-Wan Kenobi later appeared to Luke in the form of a force ghost to help him on his journey. Having appeared in the very first Star Wars movie, and with a dedicated series on its way, Obi-Wan Kenobi has always been one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars Universe.
