The best films for a quiet evening: Sweetness, humour and calm

Easy movies for a cozy evening

Choosing a light movie for the evening sometimes turns into a task for many hours. To avoid drowning in dozens of selections and your saves, we have compiled a universal guide with heartwarming movies for you and your loved ones. Some of them will appeal not only to adults but also to younger viewers.

If you like to spend your leisure time gambling, like slots and roulette, then  will also please you.

Lost in Translation, 2003.

One of the most iconic films from independent filmmaker Sofia Coppola, the daughter of Ford Coppola (“Apocalypse Now,” “The Godfather”), who took after her father, opens the list. The events occur in modern-day Tokyo, where Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and famous actor Bob (Bill Murray) lives in a hotel. The girl spends her evenings waiting for her husband, who is away on the set, while Bob is starring in commercials and going through a mid-life crisis. They invariably meet in a bar lobby and finally decide to talk. The friendship develops into a romantic adventure with visits to a strip club, karaoke and other places. Both are trying to find the words to say the most important thing. It is worth adding that this is one of Murray’s best roles, where he is uniquely good.

Some Like It Hot, 1959.

A Hollywood classic comes to the rescue in all sorts of confusing situations. According to the author, it is a perfect movie for a pleasant evening. The film was made in 1959 – the case when age do you good. It’s a light comedy story about two hapless jazz musicians (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) who are forced to hide from the Chicago mob. To survive, the friends must turn on their wits and disguise themselves as women. So they go on tour to Florida as part of a female orchestra, where they meet the charming Sweetheart (Marilyn Monroe) who dreams of meeting a millionaire and the love of her life. Positive emotions and smiles are guaranteed – this is the brilliant work of director Billy Wilder.

Death Becomes Her, 1992.

One of the most enjoyable and good-naturedly sarcastic comedies in the genre of black humour. You can watch this one with girlfriends, best friends and yourself. Starring only an all-star cast:

  • Meryl Streep;
  • Goldie Hawn;
  • In this movie, Bruce Willis appears just atypical for him: his character is timid, weak-willed and indulges his wife in everything.

In the story, the two “sworn girlfriends” are trying to overcome the crisis of personality and, by all means, preserve their fading youth. In pursuing beauty, they lose their temper and use radical methods. See for yourself how it all came out.

When Harry Met Sally, 1989.

Finding an easy movie for an evening with a high rating so that it meets your expectations can be challenging. Get this marvellous romantic comedy from Rob Reiner into your piggy bank. The story centres on the relationship between Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan). They meet as college graduates and decide to conquer New York City. Life over 12 years will collide the characters at different stages; these two will argue and learn in practice whether friendship between a man and a woman is possible and a happy life together when each has baggage in the form of failed relationships.

The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001.

Wes Anderson knows how to make aesthetic and witty movies where the problem is stated and there is room for humour. It adds to the lightness of his films, even when he is talking about serious things. Tale of the Tenenbaum Family is a film worth seeing if this is the first time you have seen this director’s work. In the story, the head of the Royal Tenenbaum family (Gene Hackman) gathers his grown children to spend his last weeks with them before his passing. The once-successful Margo (Gwyneth Paltrow), Chas (Ben Stiller) and Richie (Luke Wilson) return to the family nest to sort out their relationships and their own lives. The characters of Bill Murray and the handsome Owen Wilson become the cherry on the cake and add to an already excellent cast.

Punch-Drunk Love, 2002.

Oscar-winning Paul Thomas Anderson is famous for his dramatic films, which we also recommend you to watch in a different mood: “Oil”, “Magnolia”, “And Boogie Nights”. A romantic comedy starring comedian Adam Sandler (something you least expect from a director). It is a story about a “man in a box” in the twenty-first century, where there is a house – a job, a lot of complexes from childhood and even more fears and loneliness. Love is what changes and transforms, and enables the average man to become a person. The dysfunctional Barry is just making this journey, falling in love with Lena (Emily Watson) and trying to defend his right to happiness from a group of crooks headed by Dean (Philip Seymour Hoffman).

The Artist, 2011.

What to watch before going to bed, think about eternal things, and smile? Indeed, a musical film made in the aesthetics of black and white silent films. Starring Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo, they are an excellent acting tandem. Georges Valentin’s star is fading; he once had fame, admirers and a beloved wife. With the advent of sound cinema, he loses his former popularity and doubts himself (a classic Sunset Boulevard-inspired plot); a talented girl Peppy, whom he once helped launch his acting career, comes into his life; now it’s her turn to save her idol. We envy you because the excellent impression of watching will remain for a long time.
